🌍 Happy Earth Day! 🌏 Earth is Sacred 🌎

I sent this today as a bonus email to folks signed up for my email newsletter. I've decided to also share the main body of the email here, since I took time to write it out, and more of you may be interested!

You can sign up for my emails on my website, CaraMiaWitch.com.

This post also links to a class info page, that will be removed after May 2026, so you may wish to refer to my overall Classes & Workshops page after that point, instead!

🌍 Happy Earth Day, everyone! 🌏

As a Pagan Witch, as an Earth-centered and Nature-centered practitioner, Earth Day does get a bit more recognition from me in a spiritual sense, though it isn't meant to be a spiritual holiday. It's a secular and action focused day, celebrated since 1970, that aims to continually work for the betterment of this planet we all call home.

That said, as a Witch, very little that I do is truly secular.

The word "secular" is often used by Pagans (or Pagan-adjacent folks) on the internet to describe not working with Deities (something I would more term atheistic or non-theistic craft), or it's given as meaning "not religious" which MANY people get around by saying "I'm spiritual, not religious." But I find that a lot of people have very narrow definitions of "religion" when they say that.

I really like this article on the subject from Psychology Today, which breaks it down into Beliefs, Behaviors, and Belonging. I've referred to this article many times when discussing what I mean by these things, so you might enjoy it!

What I'm talking about here is this: I tend to think of "secular" as referring to "things that have nothing whatsoever to do with the spirit or spiritual matters." But there is very little that I do that is completely separated from my spirituality. So even things that are intended to be secular, open to all people regardless of religion/spiritual path, and GENERALLY SPEAKING have nothing to do with spirit... can nevertheless become spiritual.

My classic example? Grocery shopping. It's a pretty mundane and everyday type of task, and generally has nothing to do with religion or spirituality. But what if I'm shopping for food for a ritual, and I'm choosing foods that energetically suit the intention? What if someone is a Kitchen Witch preparing a menu for a Witchcamp, picking produce that calls to them when they tune into the thread of magic needed? Then grocery shopping becomes spiritual.

Another example is how most people might wash the floor on any given day, versus someone who is washing their floor with a cleansing wash made with intention to clear away energetic debris and magically cleanse their home. They are doing the same household task, but one is doing it secularly, and the other, spiritually.

There is not such a clear divide for people whose spirituality is immanent in all things.

Earth Day is not a religious holiday, but if your religion honors the Earth as sacred, then Earth Day might be a sacred day for you. The way that I engage in Earth Day actions, whether on April 22 or all year round -- cleaning up beaches or parks or roadsides in my area, recycling, conserving water and energy, and many more -- can become spiritual in the way that I do them, if I am doing them with acknowledgement that for me, and for many people on this planet, the Earth is sacred.

  • When we call in the Elements, including Earth, and acknowledge them as sacred...

  • When we invoke the Earth Goddess for ritual...

  • When we clean up the beach while singing chants and connecting to the Water and the Land...

That's spiritual as fuck.

🌏

However you acknowledge this day, whether you even do or not, and whether you engage in planet-conserving actions, or do ritual, or simply enjoy some time outdoors,

May the Earth hold us,

may our bodies bless the ground we live upon,

and may we move with reverence and gratitude

for this life-sustaining planet.

So mote it be.

Blessed Be.

Here are a couple songs I love that are about the lovely Earth which holds us:
